Gen. Lim fights back, will file contempt charges vs. PNP custodians

After barring him from attending a university forum yesterday, the camp of detained Brigadier General Danilo “Danny” Lim is considering the filing of contempt charges against his Philippine National Police (PNP) custodians.
In a statement, Belle Enriquez, official spokesperson of Lim said the action of the PNP is despicable and inexcusable.

“This just shows how deep the culture of impunity under the Arroyo government is. Despite the presence of a court order, they willfully defied it using feeble reasons. They just don’t care if the law is circumvented as long as they get their way. We will not be bullied. We will fight this out,” Enriquez said.

Enriquez said the action of the PNP is the height of irony. She said from being the implementer of laws, the PNP has turned out to be “more and more of a lawbreaker.”

“Gen. Lim is detained because he is being wrongfully accused of violating our laws, short of being called a criminal. And yet, here we see his jailors violating the same laws he has consistently obeyed and respected behind bars,” Enriquez quipped.

Lim also got the support of the Liberal Party where he is running as its guest candidate. Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, LP’s senate campaign manager said the PNP committed a gross defiance of a rule of law.

“Our police should be the ones enforcing the law. If they cannot do what they are mandated to do, then heads must roll,” Pangilinan said.

It was reported that Judge Elmo Alameda of RTC Branch 150 granted Lim a temporary pass on Wednesday to allow him to attend a public forum on “Military and Social Change” yesterday at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. However, the PNP said that Lim could not be released from detention citing inadequate security.

Lim’s camp said it was not the first time the PNP failed to comply with a court order.

Last February, the PNP also allegedly barred Lim’s communication and advertising crew access to the detained general last month despite a permit from the court. The crew was trying to finish a campaign infomercial.

As of the moment, Lim’s camp is already preparing the necessary legal papers to file charges against the PNP.

“The harassment must stop. They will have their day in court,” Enriquez concluded. ###
